We are very happy to have reached the final round of the Google Impact Challenge. Some demanding application rounds are behind us, but now we have a unique opportunity to provide you, the heart piece, our community, with better opportunities to experience the edible landscape and to work together with us.
The Google Impact Challenge is a grant competition for non-profit organizations and associations in Germany. It focusses on ideas on how the work of organizations can be improved with the help of digital technology or other creative approaches. The best ideas are evaluated in two ways: by a panel of experts and by public online vote. For the 2nd we need YOU. The winners will receive prize money and support from Google and its partners in the realization of their ideas.
Where you can vote for Mundraub?
You can vote online on https://goo.gl/GIvCc4. Overall, every citizen has four votes. A voice in the category "lighthouse projects" and three votes in the category "Local Projects". All votes can be turned in until 24 February, 23:59.
What exactly is Mundraub’s plan?
Mundraub Plus enables society, through the further development of the platform mundraub.org, not only to map edible cities & landscapes and harvest, but actively shape forgotten landscapes. We raise curiosity and thus knowledge and commitment to intergenerational replanting, maintenance and use of public and freely available fruit in the 21st century. We increase our data quality and credibility through improved validation of the sites and multiplication of offline engagements, publication of municipal tree inventory, introduction of Restricted Areas for residential and conservation areas and creation of Smart Trees.
What is the outcome for the Mundraub community?
We can also fulfill your wishes, because now we can finally provide an improved web app as well as an API so that you have also access to "our" data. We take your desire for greater networking in account with new features to become active also in front of your doorstep.
What is the importance of the project for our society?
The globalized urban society is increasingly losing touch with nature as their livelihoods, especially for regional and seasonal food. There is a lack of knowledge about food production and natural cycles (Jugendreport Nature 2010), number of orchards since 1950 declined by 80% (NABU 2015), same goes for allees (BUND 2015). This endangers these biodiversity hotspots with 3,000 fruit varieties and 5,000 animal and plant species (MLR BaWü 2015). The Pomologe Association complained in 2015 a strong knowledge erosion. The value index in 2016 by TNS Infratest lists as first places: health, freedom (autonomy / self-determination) and success (improved quality of life) as well as nature as a spiritual improvement and place of recreation. Mundraub supports all these values.
Mundraub Plus creates an awareness and change of perspective, thereby preserving biodiversity and allows a diverse civic engagement. The idea of a better world is not enough. It is important to implement. A satisfying generation contract (one generation plants, three generations harvest) creates community and secures fruit trees in the cultural landscape of the 21st century.
Mundraub Plus seeks to work with the people and the cities / municipalities to provide edible adventure worlds and really allow people to look at the environment and change themselves with the help of digital networking and mapping possibilities. Mundraub brings a little romance, spirit of discovery and self-sufficiency into the clocked everyday life and the universal availability of goods and services. It should not be that a person or a family that harvests fruits from a tree in the city is looked at with pity. Almost everyone knows Mundraub and almost everyone associates happy childhood memories with the snacking from a tree in nature.
What's the idea of a “basic fruit income”?
According to a recent study about 70 kg of fruit are consumed in Germany (statistic annual consumption per person). Through implementing public tree register data we want to enlarge our map to 70,000 localities. This 70,000 locations give an average of 100 kg of fruit per location. Thus the basic fruit income can become true for future 100,000 users.
What are Smart Trees?
Smart Trees are digital pictures of real trees and localities that provide data such as age, location or blooming date. The Mundraub community can enrich their trees by using this information and adding more data, take over tree sponsorship or parenthood, and thus give the trees a voice. The trees’ icons can for example express their care needs. So Mundraub Plus transforms the Mundraub map into a digital landscape with Smart Trees.
What are Restricted Areas?
These are areas on the Mundraub map that are not free for picking, such as nature reserves or private orchards. They should not disappear from the map but be marked as such.
Legally worry free Mundraub?
We want to increase legally safe localities by sharing official data from cities and municipalities. The aim until 2017 is to integrate open data from up to 200 municipalities and districts into the Mundraub map, in order to provide public fruits to our users throughout the country legally.
With this promotion google gives us the financial freedom to realize our idea to implement an edible basic income for all. Google has announced the Impact Challenge, for which we applied as one of more than 2000 thousands non-profits to realize our visions and your criticism and suggestion to more opportunities which we could not implement so far due to the lack of financial resources.
What happens to my data?
We do not provide data to Google. Google does not have access to our server. We treat your data as always: they are safe on our server.
So the Mundraub app is coming, too?
Is Mundraub going into politics?
No, Mundraub Plus is not a political project, it's not trying to implement unconditional basic income, even if it sounds similar. If you like, we influence the nutrition policy, as we again raise awareness for forgotten fruits in our Mundraub map and for the good use of the available resources around us.
